Family Fitness - 2 Olympians in 1 house

Friday 22 June 2012 at 4:36 pm

One of the best parts of being an expat is getting to meet really amazing people. Just one of them is my new friend Kerry. She and her husband Arne moved to the Netherlands a couple of years ago from Canada so that he could pursue a PhD. On the surface they just seem like a nice little family of expats...and then you find out that they are both former Olympians and you can't help but feel 90% awed and 10% inadequate (or do I have my percentages reversed?).

When I decided to blog about fitness Kerry was one of the first people I asked to help out with content. She is so down-to-earth and outgoing that I just knew she would have great advice. I gave her a list of 9 questions around the topic of family fitness and left the responses up to her. With no further ado, here is Kerry Danker's advice for combining fitness with parenting here in the Netherlands. Read More

My Fitness Story: Those last 3 lbs

Wednesday 20 June 2012 at 3:23 pm

I have been blogging all month about fitness and parenting - with tips about how to fit a gym membership into your life and ideas for things you can do at home alone or with the family. The remainder of the posts for this series will focus on personal stories, because when you get right down to it, fitness (and the drive to do it) is a very personal thing. I have asked two friends to share their fitness stories with you. One post will talk about fitness for families - or what happens when you have two former Olympians in the house (you might be surprised!). The second will talk about fitness during and post-pregnancy and comes from a former professional women's soccer player. Both of these women have forgotten more about fitness than I ever knew.

I realized that this series wouldn't be complete if I didn't share my own battles with fitness and parenting. I am definitely not a shining example of what to do to get back into shape post-baby. I did try to set realistic goals and plans for achieving them, but I encountered set-backs and speed bumps along the way. I hope that my journey (and it is still going on) will make some of you feel better about your own and want to share your stories. Read More

We'll follow up over the course of the month with stories about exercising on your own, fitness during pregnancy and healthy eating. We have asked some experts to contribute so that we'll be sure to pass along the best tips to you.
